Lynnea Schwieters - Bio

Pottery was a big part of my life in High School and after graduation. In 1976 my teacher invited me to participate in the Early American Art Festival, The Renaissance Festival and some small festivals in the area. We worked from a small studio downtown Osseo, Minnesota. A few years later, I pursued my education in the legal field and started to plan a family. While taking clay instruction classes in 2000 I met an artist named Ernest Miller. I began independent study at his studio located in the Northrup King Building. We worked on form, surface decoration and glazing until 2005. Currently, you can find me working on new forms and glaze application at my studio located in Hugo, Minnesota.

Process & Philosophy

I enjoy the experience of working with Porcelain clay. It gives me a graceful response in texture and fluency. My vision of form is drawn from objects of nature. Some of those include flowers, fruits and living creatures. The characteristics of these shapes inspire me to create surfaces that I alter, incise or apply slips. Because I fire in an oxidation atmosphere, the application of glaze surfaces that are variegated with mottled colors best accentuate the body of my form. It is inspirational to me when you consider the fact pottery has been around for thousands of years. Many of the forms and ideas of the past are still practiced by potters today. Our craft will be enjoyed by generations to come. The path in clay I have chosen continues to be rewarding beyond my expectations.
